Twenty classroom projects representing 12 schools have been selected as semi-finalists for Bright House Networks 2005-2006 Star Teacher Awards competition. The semi-finalists were selected from a field of 36 entrants and represent some of the most creative classroom projects developed using Cable in the Classroom programming. A complete list of the semi-finalists is attached.
“Our Star Teacher Awards program underscores our commitment to supporting quality education in our communities by honoring creative teachers and the unique learning opportunities they designed for our children,” said John Rigsby, president of Bright House Networks Florida Group office.
A nationally recognized, independent panel of 7 judges will convene next month to select the top 10 winning projects. The winning teachers will be honored at Bright House Networks annual Star Teacher Awards gala on Monday, June 5 in New York City. Winning teachers each receive a Crystal Star trophy, a complimentary trip to New York to attend the gala, and a share of $10,000 in prize money.
The Star Teacher Awards competition, now in its 17th year, is open to educators in all six Bright House Networks divisions. The projects were judged on overall program content, relevance to the curriculum, learning benefits to students, innovative approach, quality of materials and activities, duration of the project, frequency and effective use of cable programming, and the number of students affected.
Bright House Networks provides the connection and basic cable service free to virtually all schools in the company’s service areas. Connected schools receive more than 540 hours of commercial-free, educational programming each month at no charge through Bright House Networks membership in Cable in the Classroom.
Lead Sponsorship of the 2005-2006 Bright House Networks Star Teacher Awards program is provided this year by NBC Universal. The June gala in New York City is being supported in part by Univision, Ovation – The Arts Network, Scientific-Atlanta, Discovery Networks, HBO, and The History Channel.
